Background: The new International Airport of Bahrain was opened yesterday (Friday) by Emir Isa Bin Sulman Al-Khalifa, the island's ruler.
The opening coincided with two other dates: the tenth anniversary of the Emir's accession to power; and four months since Bahrain became a sovereign state, severing all military and political ties with Britain which had existed since 1898.
The new airport in the first fully-operational "jumbo" airport in the Middle East - designed to handle up to three 747s or six 707s at one time.
Bahrain has a long-standing aviation history - having opened its first airport in 1932, to handle Imperial Airways (the forerunner of BOAC) Handley-Page Hannibal bi-planes on the Cairo to Karachi routes.
This film was brought to london by a passenger on a Qantas jumbo jet - the first aircraft to leave the new Bahrain airport after the opening.
