    At least 20 people died and 72 were injured when Typhoon Bess roared across norther Taiwan on Thursday (23 September) with heavy rains driven by winds of up to 125 miles (190 kms) and hour. Police said the casualty toll probably would rise as rescue work continued.

    Power supplies were cut off in many parts of Taipei for more than 24 hours, schools and government of faces closed and all flights in and out of the city's international airport where suspended.

    Rivers burst their banks and ten thousand people were evacuated from their homes. Damage has own estimated at millions of U.S. dollars.

    It was the second time in less than a week that northern Taiwan had endured the fury of a typhoon. Last weekend, typhoon Agnas scored a direct hit in the same area.
