    Background: There was a farewell parade for four British Service Chiefs on Friday (29 October) at Sembawang Base, Singapore, as the British military withdrawal from the island was completed.

    The British military leaders were the Commander-in-Chief Far East, Air Chief Marshal Sir Brian Burnett, who took the salute at the parade and his three single service commanders, Rear Admiral Anthony Troup (Far East Fleet), Major-General Walter Thomas (Far East Land Forces), and Air Vice-Marshal Nigel Maynard (Far East Air Force).

    From November the first, Singapore will be covered by new five-nation Defence arrangements, to which contributions will be made by Singapore, Britain, New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia.
