The Congress Working Committee (top Executive of the ruling party) met at a quiet meeting for condolence of Mr. Nehru's passing away. The meeting was held at Mr. Nehru's residence where earlier the urns containing his ashes had reached home and rested under the shade of a tree in the lawns of his home. The main urn was placed on a sofa chair. Meanwhile there is strong lobbying going on about a successor to Mr. Nehru. The main contenders for the Premiership are Mr. Morarji Desai (who has declared his intention to contest an election) and Mr. Lal Bahadur Sashtri who has the backing of the Working Committee and who also a favourite of Mr. Nehru for succeeding him. Mr. Sashtri has however expressed his feelings not to contest any election. After the Working Committee meeting Mr. Desai came out with some of his supporters and posed for the photographers. Meanwhile another group of leaders came out end stood aside. Mr. Lal Bahadur Sashtri came out alone in the end and also posed for photographers at their insistence. Mr. Krishna Mennon also attended the meeting. The Congress Working Committee is expected to meet formally on 31st of May to discuss the issue of Mr. Nehru's successor.
