Sir Harold Gillet was installed as Lord Mayor of London November 10. He was escorted through the city streets by over a dozen military bands.
Sir Harold watched the procession from the Mansion House. The Territorial Army was the theme - it was celebrating its Golden Jubilee.
Crowds watched the tableaux depicting the past victories and battles in which the Territorial Army shared. Between the tableaus marched detachment of troops and bands. these same scenes were witnessed by B.B.C. television viewers, in Britain. The cavalcade of the past fifty years of the Territorial Army took about twenty minutes to pass the Mansion House.
After the tableaux of victory in 1945, came one of the future, incorporating a rocket and a sputnik.
And finally, the new Lord Mayor joined the procession in his 200 year old state coach drawn by a team of six dray horses.
He drove through the streets of London Town - from Guildhall to the Law Courts - in sunshine..... most new Lord Mayor's see London on their first drive through November fog.
Traffic dislocation was immense. But this time it was for the last time - for the procession with all its pageantry and good humour will no longer be held on a weekday.
