  • Description

About 6,000 students marched through Paris on Wednesday (21 March) in support of a strike by nearly, 1,000,000 pupils at French high schools and technical colleges against the abolition of most military deferments.

The demonstration was organised by the French Communist Party and other left-wing groups, which are backing opposition to reform of the National Service Law. The changes abolish draft deferments, except for students studying medical and allied subjects, and students who had their twentieth birth in 1972.

The demonstrators, chanting "Down with the Army - school of crime" marched to the Place de la Republique in central Paris. Another protest march, organised by left-wing extremists, was planned for Thursday (22 March).

Defence Minister Michel Debre has been mainly blamed by the students for the changes in the call-up. The strike, which began on Tuesday (20 March), has been described by M. Debre as "political manoeuvring"
