  • Description

A United States DC-10 airliner with eighty-nine passengers and crew on board, crashed on Wednesday (31 October) and burst into flames at Mexico City airport killing at least 70 people. The airliner crashed in thick fog as it was coming in to land after a flight from Los Angeles, California. Fourteen survivors were pulled from the wreckage.

SYNOPSIS: The Western airline's DC-10 jet had mainly Mexican and United States passengers aboard. The Mexican government said it landed on the wrong runway and hit a truck. Then its starboard wing hit a maintenance building near the runway and the plane exploded, and burst into flames. Eye-witnesses reported that the big plane skidded on its belly for about twelve hundred yards (metres) before reaching the building, then it broke into at least four main parts.

The survivors were in the rear section of the DC-10 and some escaped with only minor injuries. It was the worst aviation disaster in Mexican history.
