Background: Lieutenant General Ngo Dzu has been replaced as leader of the South Vietnamese delegation on the Joint Military Commission. The Command has been taken over by Airborne Commander Lieutenant General Du Quoc Dong only one week after the first meeting of the Commission.

No reason was given for the change of command. But there have been reports that it may be connected with an attack by local people on communist members of the Commission in the hill town of B??? ???e Thuot last Friday.

The South Vietnamese Government has officially apologized for the incident.

The joint Military Commission is composed of North Vietnamese, South Vietnamese, the Liberation Front and the United States.

General Dong, South Vietnam's new leader on the Commission, refused to give full details of the change:
SYNOPSIS: There was a guard of honour for Airborne Commander Lieutenant General Du Quoc Dong as he left the Defence Ministry in Saigon on Sunday. He had just been made leader of the South Vietnamese delegation to the Joint Military Commission which implements the ceasefire. Lieutenant General Ngo Dzu was replaced as leader only a week after the first meeting of the Commission.

The cause of the sudden change in leadership remains unknown. But reports said it could be related to an attack on communist members of the Commission in a hill town last Friday. The Joint Military Commission is composed of North and South Vietnamese, the Liberations Front and the Americans.
