Background: The Mauritiue Prime Minister, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam visited India on Saturday (13 April) and had meetings with both the Indian President, Varahagiri Venkata Giri and the Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi.

After the half-hour meeting with mrs. Gandhi in New Delhi, Sir Seewoosagur refused to elaborate on specific subjects discussed, but it was reported that the two premiers seemed certain to have talked about United States plans to expand their base facilities on the British-owned Indian Ocean Island of Diego Garcia. Earlier Sir Seewoosagur had told newsmen that Mauritius had protested to Britain and the United States about expansion of the base.

Britain retained the island for a fee of GBP 3 million when Mauritius became independent on condition that Diego Garcia would be used only as a communications centre.

The Mauritius Premier arrived in India on Thursday (12 April) and was to leave again on Sunday (14 April) for New York where he is to address the special United Nations General Assembly session on raw materials on Monday (15 April).
