    THE FIRST PAN-AFRICAN CULTURAL FESTIVAL HAD ENDED IN ALGIERS AFTER BRINGING TOGETHER MORE THAN 4,000 PARTICIPANTS FROM 31 COUNTRIES, THE 12-DAY EVENT WAS CLIMAXED ON FRIDAY (1 AUGUST) BY A DISPLAY BY HUNDREDS OF DANCERS FROM ALL PARTS OF THE AFRICAN CONTINENT.

    A MANIFESTO ISSUED AT THE END OF THE FESTIVAL SAID IT WAS THE DUTY OF ALL AFRICAN COUNTRIES TO PROMOTE AFRICAN CULTURE AND TO SEARCH FOR AFRICAN UNITY AND A RETURN TO THE SOURCES OF AFRICAN VALUES.

    THE 6,000-WORD MANIFESTO WAS SUPPORTED BY DELEGATES FROM THE PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES AND SIX AFRICAN LIBERATION MOVEMENTS WHO TOOK PART IN A SYMPOSIUM ON AFRICAN CULTURE.

    THE FINAL DAY OF THE FESTIVAL, SPONSORED BY THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY (OUA), PROVIDED A SPECTACULAR CLIMAX. WITH FOLKLORE GROUPS COMPETING FOR PRIZES IN THE ANASSER STADIUM AND OTHER NON-COMPETITIVE GROUPS DANCING BEFORE A BIG PUBLIC AUDIENCE IN THE PRINCIPAL SQUARES OF ALGIERS.

    THE REPUBLIC OF GUINEA WON THE MAIN PRIZE OF THE FESTIVAL, AND FIVE OTHER OF THE 18 MEDALS PRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT OF ALGERIA, M. HOUARI BOUMEDIENNE. NINE OTHER COUNTRIES SHARED MEDALS AWARDED FOR THEATRE, FOLK-DANCING, MODERN BALLET, MODERN ORCHESTRA, VOCAL MUSIC AND TRADITIONAL INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC.

    PROPOSALS WHICH HAVE ARISEN OUT OF THE FESTIVAL AND SYMPOSIUM INCLUDE THE CREATION OF A PAN-AFRICAN CINEMA INSTITUTE, AFRICAN PUBLISHING HOUSES AND CULTURAL MAGAZINES.
