  • Description

At Singapore's international airport on Tuesday, Malaysia's Prime Minister Tun Abdal Razak arrived for a three-day official visit.

He was greeted by Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Yuan Yew and other high-ranking government officials.

Tun Razak's trip is the first official visit by a Malaysian Prime Minister since Singapore left the Malaysian Federation in 1965 and became independent.

Officially, the Malaysian Prime Minister is paying a goodwill visit in return for one to Kuala Lumpur last year by Mr. Lee. But the two leaders are expected to confer on a wide range of topics, including bilateral issues on immigration restrictions and pollution in the Straits of Johore. They are also expected to discuss the changing role of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, relations with China, and the new government in Thailand.

Relations between the two countries have been strained last year when the joint Singapore-Malaysia airline was split. It was aggravated when Malaysia unilaterally terminated its currency interchangeability agreement with Singapore last May.
