Background: WHEN A REFRIGERATED MEAT LORRY ARRIVED IN WEST BERLIN FROM THE EASTERN SECTOR THIS MORNING, THREE ADULTS AND ELEVEN CHILDREN CRAWLED SHIVERING OUT OF ITS BACK TO FREEDOM. THE LORRY HAD COME THROUGH THE HEINRICH-HEINE STRASSE CHECK-POINT ON A REGULAR CROSSING TO TAKE MEAT TO A WEST BERLIN BUTCHER. AT THE CHECK-POINT, EAST GERMAN BORDER GUARDS LOOKED IN THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE, BUT FAILED TO SLE THE ILLEGAL PASSENGERS HIDDEN AMONG THE CONSIGNMENT.

HERR ROSS, THE 32-YEAR-OLD LORRYDRIVER, TOLD THE STORY OF THE ESCAPE IN WEST BERLIN TODAY. HE SAID THE ESCAPE HAD BEEN PLANNED FOR SOME MONTHS, BUT IT HAD BEEN POSTPONED SEVERAL TIMES. THE LORRY-DRIVER HAD KEPT A RENDEZVOUS SEVEN MILES (II KMS) OUTSIDE BERLIN WITH HIS WIFE AND EIGHT DAUGHTERS; HIS WIFE'S TWIN SISTERS, HER THREE CHILDREN AND HUSBAND. THE CHILDREN WERE LIGHTLY DRUGGED TO KEEP THEN QUIET DURING THE DANGEROUS CROSSING. EVEN SO, ONE SMALL GIRL WAS SPANKED FOR MAKING TOO MUCH NOISE. THE FOURTEEN STOWAWAYS HUDDLED IN A SPACE 5 FEET SQUARE (1.524 METRES) IN A TEMPERATURE OF 50 DEGREES F.

AT THE CHECKPOINT, THE EAST GERMAN GUARDS SPENT FIVE MINUTES INSPECTING HERR ROSS'S PAPERS AND ACTUALLY PEERED IN TO EXAMINE THE BACK OF THE LORRY. BUT THE CHILDREN REMAINED SILENT, AND THE GUARDS SAW NOTHING. SAFELY IN WEST BERLIN, THE CHILDREN WERE RUSHED TO HOSPITAL, ALL SICK FROM THE COLD, UNHEALTHY AIR. THE TWO FAMILIES WILL REMAIN IN BERLIN FOR A FEW DAYS BEFORE JOINING RELATIVES IN WEST GERMANY.
