  • Description

The seventh congress of the Albanian Labour Youth Union ended in Albasan on Thursday (29 September) with an address by the chairman of Albania's Communist Party, Mr. Enver Hoxha. On his arrival at the congress in the central Albanian city he was accorded a welcome befitting his position as the country's leader.

SYNOPSIS: Many people came out to greet Mr. Hoxha as he drove through the city in a motorcade. He had been unable to attend the opening of the congress three days earlier, but he had instead sent a message to delegates.

The congress was held at the city's Metallurgical Combine, the largest factory in the country, and city officials and youth leaders greeted Mr. Hoxha on his arrival. More than 2,000 delegates from all part of Albania attended the congress, and earlier in the week they had discussed various issues affecting youth. They presented a scarf to Mr. Hoxha to mark his visit.

In his address Mr. Hoxha congratulated the union on its achievements in past year, and spoke of future education of Albanian youth as being one of the country's major tasks. The union was urged to educate youth with what was called "sound revolutionary spirit" and "good Communist ideals". Older Albanian students are now encouraged to work in factories or on farms for short periods before beginning careers.

Albania has few links with the outside world and is recognised as Europe's poorest nation.
