  • Description

Delegates of the United States and Soviet space administrations agreed on Monday (17 July) to work together in a project involving the mid-space docking of their respective maned space-craft for late 1975.

The two delegations--representing the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R. -- initiated discussions on the project on July 6th at the NASA Kenned Spacecraft Centre in Houston, Texas. This official NASA film shows the delegates announcing and explaining their decision to begin the project at a press conference given at the Centre on Monday (17 July).

The delegates were led on the Soviet side by President of the Council of INTERCOSMOS, Boris N. Petrov, ad Technical Director of Project, K.D. Busheyev. Manned Spacecraft Director Dr. C.C. Kraft and Project Technical Director G.S. Lunney led the U.S. delegation.

Discussions on the project were based on the agreement between the two countries on co-operation in the exploration and peaceful use of outer space that was signed recently by Soviet Prime Minister Alexei Kosygin, and President Richard Nixon of the United States.

The mission envisages a mid-space docking of a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft and an American Apollo craft. Both craft will be locked together for two days during which tie the two crows will exchange visit and go through routine manoeuvres together. It was also agreed that the two teams be trained in each other's countries, and if necessary learn each other's language.

There follows a transcription of extracts of the speech made by Dr. Kraft and a translation from Dr. Petrov's statement during the conference.
