  • Description

Pakistan's President General Zia Ul-Haq convened a special meeting of his foreign envoys on Sunday (9 December) in Islambad to discuss the situation in Iran and the continuing problems at the border with Afghanistan. On Saturday (8 December) Pakistan accused Afghanistan of launching an air raid on border villages.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting took place at the Foreign Office in Islambad. As well as discussing the Iran crisis with his envoys the President touched on relations with the United States, the Soviet Union and China. The Ambassadors to those countries were briefed on the continuing hostage situation in Iran and General Zia's view of the situation.

On Saturday (8 December) General Zia said Pakistan's relations with the United States had not been affected by last month's sacking of the American Embassy in Islambad. On the twenty-first of November hundreds of demonstrators besieged the Embassy, apparently in response to a false report that the United States was involved in the seizure of the Grand Mosque in Mecca. General Zia condemned the protest saying it was against Islamic principles and morality.

General Zia is also concerned about Pakistan's strained relations with Afghanistan. The Moslem rebellion in Afghanistan has sent thousands of refugees streaming across the border and several rebel leaders are said to be based in Pakistan. Recently, there have been allegations of Afghanistani bombing attacks inside the Pakistani border.
