  • Description

SUDANESE LEADER MAJOR-GENERAL JAAFAR MOHAMED EL NIMEIRY FLEW INTO CAIRO YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) TO JOIN THE FOUR-POWER ARAB SUMMIT CONFERENCE.

A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AFTER THE TALKS CALLED ON THE ARAB NATIONS TO CLOSE RANKS AGAINST ISRAEL TO RESTORE TERRITORY LOST IN THE JUNE 1967 WAR.

THE MEETING MADE IT CLEAR THAT THE FRONT-LINE ARAB COUNTRIES WERE PREPARED TO BEAR THE BRUNT OF THE CONFLICT WITH ISRAEL -- BUT THE REST OF THE ARAB WORLD WAS EXPECTED TO SHARE THE COST.

THE LEADERS WHO MET THE SUDANESE RULER WERE: PRESIDENT NASSER OF THE UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC; KING HUSSEIN OF JORDAN, SYRIAN HEAD OF STATE DR. NUREDDIN EL ATTASSI, AND IRAQ'S DEPUTY PREMIER GENERAL SALEH MAHDI AMMASH.

THE COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AFTER THE THREE DAY SUMMIT SAID: "THE BATTLE IS TOO BIG TO BE CONFINED TO ONE PLACE....IT IS A BATTLE OF DESTINY." HELP GIVEN TO THE FRONT-LINE NATIONS BY THE OIL STATES -- SAUDI ARABIA, KUWAIT AND LIBYA -- WAS INDIRECTLY MENTIONED IN THE STATEMENT. IT SAID: "THE ECONOMIC BACKING GIVEN TO SOME CONFRONTATION COUNTRIES PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN INCREASING THEIR CAPACITY TO STAND FAST."
EGYPT RECEIVES SOME 100 MILLION STERLING FROM THE OIL STATES UNDER THE TERMS OF THE 1967 KHARTOUM SUMMIT AS COMPENSATION FOR THE LOSS OF THE SUEZ CANAL AND OTHER REVENUES.

THE MILITARY AND POLITICAL SITUATION WAS REVIEWED BY THE DELEGATIONS.
