  • Description

ELIZABETH TAYLOR WAS REPORTED IN "GREAT PAIN" AFTER A SCREAMING MOB OF FANS TORE HAIR FROM HER HEAD WHEN SHE ARRIVED IN BOSTON ON SUNDAY.

MISS TAYLOR AND RICHARD BURTON HAD FLOWN FROM MONTREAL, CANADA TO BOSTON WHERE BURTON IS TO APPEAR IN "HAMLET". A CROWD WAS WAITING FOR THEM OUTSIDE THEIR HOTEL.

THE WILD ATTACK ON MISS TAYLOR AND NEW HUSBAND BURTON STARTED IN THE LOBBY OF THE USUALLY STAID SHERATON PLAZA HOTEL, WHEN HORDES OF ADMIRERS SURGED OVER THE COUPLE.

CLAWING AND PUSHING, THEY PULLED HAIR FROM THE HEADS OF BOTH, AND THEN CONCENTRATED ON MISS TAYLOR, TEARING HER AWAY FROM BURTON. AS SHE WAS SWEPT ALONG BY THE YELLING MASS OF HUMANITY HER FACE WAS JAMMED AGAINST A WALL, TWISTING HER NECK. IN TEARS, MISS TAYLOR FOUGHT TO GET THROUGH THE MOB, BUT IT TOOK HER MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES TO FORCE HER WAY THROUGH THE LOBBY TO THE HAVEN OF THE LIFT. "MY WIFE WAS ALMOST KILLED", STORMED BURTON AFTER THE INCIDENT.

AN ATTENDING DOCTOR WHO SENT MISS TAYLOR TO BED WITH A SEDATIVE WHEN HE FOUND HER WHITE-FACED AND IN SHOCK, SAID HE FEARED THE JOSTLING MAY HAVE AGGRAVATED A BACK INJURY FOR WHICH MISS TAYLOR UNDERWENT SURGERY SIX YEARS AGO. THE DOCTOR SAID MISS TAYLOR WAS SUFFERING FROM A SPRAINED RIGHT SHOULDER AND NUMEROUS BRUISES.
