    THE AFRICAN GAMES - THE CONTINENT'S FIRST MAJOR OLYMPIC-TYPE FESTIVAL OF SPORT - BEGAN IN BRAZZAVILLE LAST SUNDAY WITH AN IMPOSING OPENING CEREMONY. IT WAS A SUPERBLY ORGANISED START TO AN EIGHT-DAY FIESTA OF SPORT IN WHICH 2,500 COMPETITORS FROM NEARLY THIRTY AFRICAN NATIONS ARE TAKING PART.

    AMONG THE 20,000 SPECTATORS WERE HUNDREDS OF POLICE AND TROOPS, MANY WEARING STEEL HELMETS AND ARMED WITH SUB-MACHINE GUNS. THIS WAS PART OF THE GOVERNMENT'S STRICT SECURITY PRECAUTIONS TO PREVENT ANY INCIDENTS FROM SPOILING THE OPENING DAY.

    A MARCH PAST BY OVER 2,000 GAILY DRESSED CONGOLESE CHILDREN BEGAN THE OPENING DAY CEREMONY. THEN CAME THE PARADE OF THE ATHLETES. AS THIS FINISHED SEVERAL HUNDRED PIGEONS, FLOWN FROM THE PARIS CITY COUNCIL AS A GIFT, WERE RELEASED. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE FIRST DAY WAS PROVIDED BY PRESIDENT MASSAMBA DEBAT WHO FLEW IN BY HELICOPTER TO OPEN THE GAMES.

    MONDAY, FIRST DAY OF COMPETITION SAW OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES FROM ALGERIAN CYCLISTS. TO 21-YEAR-OLD ALGERIAN AHMED DZELLIL WENT THE HONOUR OF WINNING THE GAMES FIRST GOLD MEDAL. DZELLIL WON THE CYCLE ROAD RACE OVER A COURSE OF 97 MILES (156 KILOMETRES IN 3 HOURS 59 MINUTES 30 SECONDS. HIS COMPATRIOT, ZAAF, WAS SECOND IN FOUR HOURS 4 MINUTES 40 SECONDS.)
    (GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS SAY THAT SECURITY PRECAUTIONS ARE BEING TAKEN IN BRAZZAVILLE TO AVOID INCIDENTS BY WHAT THEY CALL "MALCONTENTS" AND "COUNTER-REVOLUTIONARIES" WHO MAY BE EAGER TO SPOIL THIS FIRST AFRICAN FESTIVAL OF SPORT.)
