    ALTHOUGH ENGLAND, MANAGED BY SIR ALF RAMSEY, DOMINATED THROUGHOUT MUCH OF THE GAME, THEIR EFFORTS WERE HAMPERED BY DISJOINTED ATTACKS. MANY SHOTS AT THE GOAL WERE SUCCESSFULLY FENDED OFF BY RUMANIAN GOAL-KEEPER GHORGE GORNEA.

    IN THE FIRST HALF GORNEA STOPPED TWO DRIVES FROM ENGLAND'S CAPTAIN BOBBY CHARLTON. ENGLAND'S ONE GOAL WAS SCORED BY CHARLTON'S BROTHER, JACKIE, PLAYING CENTRE HALF. TWENTY-SEVEN MINUTES INTO THE MATCH , AFTER ENGLAND HAD FORCED FOUR SUCCESSIVE CORNERS, BOBBY CHARLTON KICKED ACROSS THE CENTRE OF THE GOAL AND HIS BROTHER ROSE TO HEAD THE BALL IN.

    ENGLAND'S GOALIE GORDON BANKS MANAGED TO MAKE A SAVE FOLLOWING A RUMANIAN ATTACK IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE MATCH.

    ANOTHER RUMANIAN ATTACK ENDED IN A PENALTY. THIS WAS GIVEN AWAY BY JACKIE CHARLTON AND RUMANIA'S DUMITRACHE WAS ABLE TO MAKE THE GOAL AFTER 72 MINUTES OF PLAY. THE SCORE WAS TIED UP AT 1-1.

    RUMANIA RETREATED INTO A DEFENSIVE SHELL FOR THE FINAL 15 MINUTES OF THE GAME DEFYING WAVE AFTER WAVE OF ENGLAND ATTACKS.
