    GOVERNMENT OFFICES, BANKS AND SCHOOLS WERE CLOSED TODAY TO MARK THE OCCASION. BUT SHOPS REMAINED OPENED FOR THE DAY, WHICH HAS BEEN DECLARED AN OFFICIAL BUT NOT A PUBLIC HOLIDAY.

    CROWDS LINED THE ROUTE TAKEN BY THE GREEK REGENT, LIEUTENANT-GENERAL GEORGE ZOITAKIS AND PRIME MINISTER, GEORGE PAPADOPOULOS TO ATHENS CATHEDRAL.

    STRICT SECURITY PRECAUTIONS WERE IN FORCE, BUT NO INCIDENTS WERE REPORTED DURING THE CELEBRATIONS.
