Background: East Germany's women's 100 metre relay squad crowned their country's success on the last night of the European Athletics Championships in Rome on Sunday (8 September) when they reduced their own world record to 42.51 seconds.

The win also ensured that East Germany were ahead of the Soviet Union by 10 golds to nine in the tale of medals.

The East Germans, who had not previously led the table during the week-long championships, threw everything into their last day of competition and took five golds and two world records.

Much of the honour of the last day went to Britain who scored a golden treble of wins with some of the most courageous performances the crowd at Rome had seen.

The front-running of Brendan Foster killed off the rest of the field in the 5,000 metres final and won in a championship record of 13 minutes 17.2 seconds. And Ian Thompson also led from start to finish in the marathon. Britain's third gold in the 4 x 400 men's relay brought the British athletes to third place overall.

A fine win in the Men's 4 x 100 metres gave France sixth place with two gold medals and two silver.
