    THE VERDICT IN THE TRIAL OF THE RAND DAILY MAIL EDITOR-IN-CHIEF LAURENCE GANDAR AND REPORTER BENJAMIN PROGRUND CHARGED WITH PUBLISHING FALSE INFORMATION, IS TO BE ANNOUNCED ON WEDNESDAY (JULY 9).

    BOTH ARE ACCUSED OF PUBLISHING FALSE INFORMATION ABOUT CONDITIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA'S PRISONS. IN ARTICLES WRITTEN BY PROGRUND, ALLEGATIONS WERE MADE OF BRUTALITY IN THE PRISONS.

    THE TRIAL STARTED IN NOVEMBER, THREE YEARS AFTER THE ARTICLES WERE PUBLISHED. IT ENDED LAST MONTH WITH BOTH DEFENDANTS PLEADING NOT GUILTY TO THE CHARGES.

    SOME OF THE ARTICLES PUBLISHED CONSISTED OF THREE REPORTS OF LIFE IN SOUTH AFRICAN PRISONS BY A FORMER LECTURER. HAROLD STRACHAN. HE HAD SERVED A THREE YEAR SENTENCE FOR ALLEGED POLITICAL CONSPIRACY. POLICE RAIDED THE NEWSPAPER OFFICE AND MR. STRACHAN WAS PLACED UNDER ARREST. CHARGES WERE LATER MADE AGAINST THE JOURNALISTS.

    DOROMO IS THE BLOCK OF FLATS WHERE REPORTER PROGRUND LIVED AT THE TIME OF THE PUBLICATION OF THE ARTICLES.

    IT IS AN OFFENCE UNDER THE 1959 PRISONS ACT TO PUBLISH ANY FALSE INFORMATION CONCERNING THE ADMINISTRATION OF A PRISON.

    THE EDITOR MR. GANDAR SAID BEFORE THE TRIAL THAT HE FEARED HE MAY GO TO PRISON AS A RESULT OF HIS PAPER'S STAND BUT HE HOPED HE DIDN'T BECOME A MARTYR.

    THROUGH AN EDITORIAL IN THE PAPER MR. GANDAR URGED FOR A PUBLIC ???UIRY INTO THE CONDITIONS OF SOUTH AFRICAN PRISONS.

    THE VERDICT ON WEDNESDAY WILL AFFECT FUTURE PRESS FREEDOM IN ??? AFRICA.
