  • Description

Inmates at the West Virginia State Penitentiary released the five guards they'd hold as hostages on Wednesday (21 March) after keeping them locked up for more than 24 hours.

The rebellious prisoners agreed to free the men only after State officials agreed to most of their demands. The prison's governor, Mr. Arch Moore, emerged from the main entrance of the prison with the guards. He was a surprise negotiator at a three-hour meeting with the inmates.

The truce had barely been declared when the National Guard moved back into the prison. There was sudden clash between black and white prisoners. Soon after, the body of a young negro prisoner was removed from the prison. A guard said that other prisoners had cut his head off for being what he said was a "squealer".

The trouble ended immediately and all prisoners went into the exercise yard. Mr. Moore said the prisoners had his world that 13 of their 15 demands would be met, and he said the prisoners were happy about it.
