Background: GERMAN WILHELM BUNGERT FOUGHT HIS WAY INTO THE QUARTER FINALS WHEN HE DEFEATED UNPREDICTABLE BRITISH PLAYER BOBBY WILSON IN THEIR HEAT AT THE WIMBLEDON TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY. THE SPANISH TEAM OF ARILLA AND SANTANA FELL TO DRYSDALE OF SOUTH AFRICA AND ULRICH OF DENMARK IN THEIR DOUBLES MATCH.

BUNGERT, 28-YEAR-OLD, WAS A FINALIST AT WIMBLEDON IN 1964 AND 1965. TODAY HE BEAT BOBBY WILSON, HIMSELF A WIMBLEDON VETERAN, 1-6, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5, 9-7. AFTER A SHAKY START THE GERMAN REGAINED FORM AND EVENTUALLY OUTLASTED HIS BRITISH OPPONENT.

THERE WAS AN UNSCHEDULED INTERRUPTION DURING THE SECOND SET OF THE MATCH, WHEN A SWARM OF BEES INVADED THE ARENA.

ACCURACY PROVED THE DECISIVE ELEMENT OF BUNGERT'S SUCCESS, PARTICULARLY IN HIS SUCCESSFUL FINAL THREE SETS.

THE DRYSDALE-ULRICH TEAM HAD TO FIGHT HARD TO WIN ITS MATCH AGAINST WELL-TEAMED SPANIARDS ARILLA AND SANTANA.

THE MATCH WENT TO FIVE SETS, WITH SOME FIERCE PLAY IN THE OPENING STAGES. SANTANA AND ARILLA WON THE FIRST SET 8-6, BUT ULRICH AND DRYSDALE FOUGHT BACK IN THE SECOND TO WIN 9-11. THE THIRD SET WAS AN EASY 6-1 FOR ULRICH AND DRYSDALE, THE FOURTH WENT TO THE SPANIARDS 4-6 AND THE FIFTH TO ULRICH AND DRYSDALE 6-3.

SANTANA, THE NUMBER ONE SEED, WAS KNOCKED OUT OF THE SINGLES EVENTS ON THE FIRST DAY'S PLAY AT WIMBLEDON BY PASARELL, THE AMERICAN AMATEUR.
