  • Description

A new steel-hulled self-righting lifeboat soon to go into service at the island of Terschelling, off the north coast of Holland, was tested by being capsized by a giant crane in Amsterdam harbour, Oct 20.

In the first test, the lifeboat was turned upside down in the water with the doors of the wheelhouse open: she then righted herself in 65 seconds. For the second test, with the doors of the wheelhouse closed, the lifeboat, helped by the buoyancy of the air-filled wheelhouse, righted herself in only 6 seconds.

Named "Carlot", the lifeboat will have a crew of 5 men, she is specially designed for work in the short, steep seas of this North Sea coast with its numerous dangerous sandbanks.
