  • Description

The heir to Prince Norodom Sihanouk of Kampuchea Cambodia -- Prince Thomico Sisowath--and two women began a hunger strike in France on Monday (25 June) They were protesting against what they termed the invasion of Kampuchea and Vietnamese expulsion of hundreds of thousand of refugees.

SYNOPSIS: The three began their protest outside the Buddhist Centre at Vincenne in Paris. They say they will fast until death.

Mademoiselle Antonya Thioulong a secretary, and Madame Lasky, an artist, -- both Indochinese -- joined the Prince when he talked to newsmen.

Prince Sisowath said the hunger strike was to draw more attention to the plight of the peoples of Kampuchea, Laos, and Vietnam, and to help provoke an international conference on the refugee problem.

A day earlier, two to three thousand protestors at the Eiffel Tower demanded a conference to examine not only the refugee problem but also the political roots causing it. Most of the demonstrators were Vietnamese, Kampuchean and Laotians and they carried banners condemning Hanoi and the Vietcong.

Monsieur Jacque Chirac, Mayor of Paris, announced on Monday (25 June) that his city had chartered a ship and an aircraft to fly more than fifteen hundred boat people to France. The country has already taken in refugees.
