  • Description

PORT LOUIS IN MAURITIUS IS QUIET AFTER TWO DAYS OF RIOTS BY UNEMPLOYED WORKERS DURING WHICH 73 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED. THE DEMONSTRATORS, ACCORDING TO THEIR SPOKESMEN, WERE PROTESTING AGAINST THE DISMISSAL OF 10,000 RELIEF WORKERS BY THE GOVERNMENT AS AN ECONOMY MEASURE.

THE ISLAND, IN THE INDIAN OCEAN, IS CALM AND POLICE SAID THE SITUATION IN PORT LOUIS -- A CITY OF 130,000 PEOPLE -- WAS UNDER CONTROL.

ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE RIOTS (SEPTEMBER 29), THE TROUBLE STATED WHILE RELIEF WORKERS WAITED AT POLICE HEADQUARTERS FOR THEIR PAY. THE WORKERS OVERTURNED A POLICE JEEP, BLOCKED TRAFFIC AND FLUNG STONES AT POLICE. IT ENDED WHEN ARMED POLICE CHASED THE WORKERS AWAY.

THE RIOTS STARTED AGAIN EARLY THIS WEEK (OCTOBER 2) AS GROUPS OF TEENAGERS CROWDED INTO THE EMPLOYMENT EXCHANGE TO REGISTER THEIR NAMES FOR EMPLOYMENT. THE EXCHANGE WAS RANSACKED AND A BONFIRE MADE OF FILES AND FURNITURE. THE OFFICE WAS DESTROYED.

THE DEMONSTRATORS SMASHED WINDOWS AND BLOCKED TRAFFIC BEFORE THEY WERE DISPERSED BY ARMED POLICE.

THE OPPOSITION IN MAURITIUS HAS DEMANDED THE IMMEDIATE RECALL OF THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY TO DISCUSS THE DISMISSAL OF RELIEF WORKERS. LATER, THE GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED IT WOULD APPOINT A COMMITTEE TO REVIEW THE WHOLE QUESTION OF UNEMPLOYMENT.
