  • Description

The study group looking into the possibility of a tunnel under the Channel between Britain and France conducted an experiment, May 27. Cars were loaded two-deep on to wagons for a trial run from the Gare de Lyon in Paris to Montereau.

It was to study passenger comfort. The experiment lasted 45 minutes, and the drivers stayed in their vehicles all the time.

Railway trucks used in the experiment are the ones now used by the French Railways for their new "auto-couchette" services.

For any shuttle service under the Channel, they would be adapted to protect vehicles and passenger from bad weather. Special floors would enable easy - and speedy - boarding and alighting.
