  • Description

The two British Paratroopers who rowed 3,000 miles (4,800 klms) across the Atlantic, Captain John Ridgway and Sergeant Charles Blythe, continued their celebrations in Galway, Ireland, tonight (Monday) after their reunion with their wives. Meanwhile their 22-foot (7 metres) rowing boat, English Rose III, is being sent to their parachute regiment's deport in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The paratroopers arrived in Galway from the nearby Aran Islands last night after rowing from Cape Cod, in the American State of Massachusetts, across the Atlantic Ocean in 92 days. Mrs. Christine Ridgway and Mrs. Maureen Blythe, were flown in to Galway to find themselves in the middle of a British newspaper "war" over exclusive interviews.

One newspaper group claimed the wives' story, another the husbands', and a tried to outbid the rest. Finally the two couples came out of the hotel to meet a group of people who just wanted to meet and cheer the rowers -- the people of Galway.
