  • Description

THE MAZABIQUE LIBERATION FRONT YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) PRODUCED WITNESSES TO A UNITED NATIONS TEAM IN DAR-ES-SALAAM WHO ARE CONSIDERING PRISON AND LABOUR CONDITIONS IN SOUTHERN AFRICA.

THE UNITED NATIONS MISSION BEGAN FORMAL HEARINGS IN TANZANIA ON MONDAY, BUT UNTIL WEDNESDAY ONLY TWO WITNESSES HAD APPEARED. THE MOZAMBIQUE WITNESSES WERE ASSISTED OUT OF PORTUGUESE TERRITORY AND FLOWN TO DAR-ES-SALAAM TO GIVE EVIDENCE.

THE WITNESSES FROM MOZAMBIQUE WERE INTRODUCED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE MOZAMBIQUE LIBERATION FRONT (FRELIMO), DOCTOR EDUARDO MONDLANE.

DOCTOR MONDLANE CRITICISED THE UNITED NATIONS FOR NOT TAKING ACTION TO RELIEVE POLITICAL SUPPRESSION IN AFRICA. HE SAID THE WORLD ORGANISATION HAD COLLECTED EVIDENCE OF SUPPRESSION ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS, BUT ALL THAT HAD RESULTED WAS "ANOTHER WORTHLESS RESOLUTION".

THE FRELIMO PRESIDENT SAID HIS PEOPLE WANTED ACTION AND NOT SYMPATHY TO RELIEVE A SITUATION WHICH AFFECTED MILLIONS OF AFRICANS. HE ALSO SPOKE OF PORTUGAL'S DETERMINATION TO RETAIN ITS AFRICAN TERRITORY AND EXPLOIT ITS NATURAL RESOURCES BY CHEAP AFRICAN LABOUR.

THE FIRST WITNESS INTRODUCED TO THE MISSION BY DOCTOR MONDLANE WAS MARTINS MARCELINO TOME, A FORMER SCHOOL-TEACHER. TOME TOLD THE UNITED NATIONS MEMBERS HE HAD REPEATEDLY BEEN BEATEN AND THREATENED BY PORTUGUESE TROOPS AND POLICE WHILE IN CUSTODY FOR EIGHT MONTHS AS A SUSPECTED TERRORIST.

HE SAID HE HAD WATCHED AS A GROUP OF THREE PRISONERS WERE LASHED AND SHOT AFTER ADMITTING MEMBERSHIP OF FRELIMO. TOME SAID HE ESCAPED IN SEPTEMBER, 1965.

THE UNITED NATIONS MISSION, LED BY MR. BRANIMIR JANKOWIC, OR YUGOSLAVIA, CONSISTS OF JURISTS FROM AUSTRIA, INDIA AND PERU. IT IS MAKING ITS INVESTIGATION WITH A MANDATE FROM THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION, AND HELD SESSIONS IN NEW YORK, LONDON, GENEVA, CONAKRY, KINSHASA AND LUSAKA. THE DAR-ES-SALAAM SESSION MARKS THE CLOSING STAGES OF THE MISSION'S SIX-NATION FACT-FINDING TOUR.
