Background: THE REVEREND IAN RICHARD KYLE PAISLEY, 42-YEAR-OLD LEADER OF NORTHERN IRELAND'S MILITANT PROTESTANT UNIONISTS, VARIOUSLY DESCRIBED IN THE BRITISH PRESS AS "ULSTER'S LOUDEST PERSONALITY" AND "DYNAMITE IN A DOG-COLLAR", WAS EARLIER THIS YEAR ONE OF THE KEY FIGURES AT THE CENTRE OF THE POLITICAL STORM WHICH SHOOK NORTHERN IRELAND AND RESULTED IN THE RESIGNATION OF ITS PRIME MINISTER, CAPTAIN TERENCE O'NEILL. HIS SUPPORT FOR THE PROTESTANT CAUSE AGAINST ROMAN CATHOLICISM HAS MADE HIM A NATIONAL FIGURE IN HIS NATIVE ULSTER, HAS TAKEN HIM BEYOND THE BOUNDS OF HIS HOMELAND AND HE IS NOW INTENDING TO HECKLE POPE PAUL WHEN HE VISITS GENEVA NEXT MONTH.

DR PAISLEY -- HIS DOCTORATE IS AN HONORARY ONE IN DIVINITY GRANTED BY THE U.S. BOB JONES UNIVERSITY IN SOUTH CAROLINA -- IS THE SON OF A BAPTIST MINISTER WHO BROKE AWAY TO FOUND HIS OWN CHURCH. HE WAS ORDAINED IN A BELFAST EVANGELICAL CHURCH.

TO MANY OF HIS SUPPORTERS, DR. PAISLEY IS MORE THAN A MAN CAMPAIGNING FOR PROTESTANT RIGHTS AND AGAINST "POPERY". HE IS A MAN WHO HAS SEVERAL TIMES GONE TO JAIL FOR HIS ACTIONS. THE MOST RECENT WAS IN JANUARY THIS YEAR, WHEN HE WAS SENTENCED TO FOUR MONTHS FOR HIS PART IN A COUNTER-DEMONSTRATION AGAINST A CIVIL RIGHTS MARCH IN ARMAGH LAST NOVEMBER -- AND WHEN HE APPEALED AGAINST HIS SENTENCE IS WAS UPPED TO SIX MONTHS BY THE APPEAL JUDGE. IN TYPICAL FASHION, HE REACTED TO HIS SENTENCING BY JOINING HIS SUPPORTERS IN SINGING "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN", AND BY PRAYING.
