  • Description

NEARLY 1,000 CLOSE RELATIVES OF THE CUBAN 'BAY OF PIGS' PRISONERS REACHED AMERICA YESTERDAY (THURSDAY). THEIR DEPARTURE WAS AUTHORISED BY CUBAN PRIME MINISTER CASTRO AS A "BONUS" ON THE DEAL TO RANSOM THE PRISONERS WHO TOOK PART IN THE ABORTIVE INVASION OF CUBA IN 1961.

AS THE FREIGHTER "AFRICAN PILOT" STEAMED INTO PORT EVERGLADES, FLORIDA, THE REFUGEES WERE GREETED BY A BIG "WELCOME" SIGN. THE EXILES, INCLUDING CHILDREN, LEFT CUBA WITH LITTLE MORE THAN THE CLOTHING ON THEIR BACKS. THEY SAID CUBAN GUARDS CONFISCATED MANY PERSONAL BELONGINGS AT THE HAVANA DOCKSIDE.

SEASICKNESS AND FOUR CASES OF MEASLES ON THE OVERNIGHT CROSSING FAILED TO DAMPEN THEIR ENTHUSIASM. THE OLDEST PERSON ABOARD WAS AN 89-YEAR-OLD GRANDMOTHER - THE YOUNGEST WAS A BABY BORN 23 DAYS AGO.

EMOTIONAL SCENES FOLLOWED LATER AT THE MIAMI AUDITORIUM WHEN THE FAMILIES WERE REUNITED WITH THE RELEASED PRISONERS. THE REUNION FOLLOWED AN AIRLIFT EARLIER THIS WEEK WHEN 1,113 PRISONERS WERE RELEASED BY DR CASTRO. CUBA GETS 53 MILLION DOLLARS WORTH OF FOOD AND DRUGS IN RETURN.

(ACCORDING TO AN OFFICIAL OF THE CUBAN FAMILIES COMMITTEE, DR CASTRO IS TO PERMIT A FURTHER 1,000 RELATIVES TO LEAVE CUBA.)
