  • Description

The Special Political Committee of the United Nations General Assembly resumed its debate on Apartheid, October 31. The previous evening, Ghana supported by Congo (Leopoldville), Guinea, Iraq, Libya, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan and the United Arab Republic, had tabled a draft resolution calling for diplomatic and economic sanctions against the Republic of South Africa.

Mr. Colin Crowe of Great Britain, opening Tuesday's debate said that a policy of apartheid "could only lead to disaster" and that Britain was completely opposed to it. However, he said that delegates must ask themselves "whether any proposal for action by the United Nations will have the effect of deepening or perpetuating South Africa's isolation.
