  • Description

AN ESTIMATED 2,000,000 FRENCH WORKERS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) BEGAN A 24-HOUR STRIKE IN PROTEST AGAINST CUTS IN SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS. DESPITE THIS, THE AVERAGE FRENCHMAN AND SOME INDUSTRIES WERE LITTLE AFFECTED.

OUT OF CONSIDERATION FOR THE PUBLIC, THE STRIKERS MODIFIED GAS AND ELECTRICITY CUTS TO TWO HOURS THIS MORNING. METROS WERE RUNNING NORMALLY AND 90 PER CENT OF BUSES WERE ON THE STREETS.

THE STRIKE WAS CALLED JOINTLY BY FRANCE'S TWO LARGEST TRADE UNIONS - THE COMMUNIST-LED CONFEDERATION GENERALE DU TRAVAIL AND THE CONFEDERATION FRANCAISE DEMOCRATIQUE DU TRAVAIL.

ONE THING WHICH WAS SEVERELY HIT BY THE STRIKE WAS THE FRENCH NEWSPAPER INDUSTRY. THERE WERE NO EVENING NEWSPAPERS TONIGHT NOR WILL THE MORNING PAPERS APPEAR TOMORROW (THURSDAY).
