  • Description

At the war memorial in Kranji, Singapore, looking over the Straits of Johore, at early dawn on April 25, Anzac Day was observed by Australian and New Zealand forces and hundreds of ex-ex-servicemen and their families.

Commissioner General for south east Asia, The Earl of Selkirk, and british service chiefs, joined the solemn procession to the Cenotaph headed by Dean E.O. Shields, a New-Zealand ex-serviceman. At the Cenotaph Rev. Shields read the opening address and conducted a prayer.

Then wreaths were laid by the Australian Commissioner in Singapore, G. A. Jocker; New Zealand Commissioner, R. L. Hutchens; Air Marshal Sir Anthony Selway, C-in-C Far East Air Force; Brig. S.J. Bleechmore, commanding Australian Army Force; Col. L. F. Brooker, Commanding the New Zealand Army Force; and others. Then one-minute silence was observed.

The Kranji Memorial commemorates the Sacrifice of Allied Armed services during the last war in the Pacific. Nearly 24,000 names of men who died fighting for freedom are inscribed on the memorial walls and on individual stones.

Representatives of the three British Regiments...The Sherwood Foresters, Princess Mary's Own Gurkha Rifles, and Queen Elizabeth's own Gurkha Rifles, who also fought in Galipoli were also present at the ceremony.
