The funeral has taken place in Jerusalem of Mr. Abdul-Nur Khalil Janhu, the wealthy West?
The funeral has taken place in Jerusalem of Mr. Abdul-Nur Khalil Janhu, the wealthy West Bank Arab assassinated last week. It was a multi-religious affair attended by hundreds of mourners and began outside Mr. Janhu's Ramallah home.
SYNOPSIS: The funeral began with a gathering outside Mr. Janhu's house, where is body had lain since his murder last week. He had been shot outside his business headquarters in centre of Ramallah. Hours before his murder, Mr. Janhu had met with Israeli Defence Minister Ezer Weizman, and discussed proposals for Arab self-rule on the West Bank. The Palestine Liberation Organisation later claimed responsibility for the killing, and denounced Mr. Janhu as an Arab traitor who had been collaborating with what it called Zionist authorities. From Ramallah, his coffin was driven in procession to Jerusalem.
At the city's New Gate, the coffin was unloaded and the cortege proceeded on foot. Mr. Janhu stood for Mayor of Ramallah in municipal elections last year and was well known in political circles. He began his political career in the 1940's and took part in several anti-Jewish operations at the time. Among these was the car bomb attack on the Palestine Post building in 1948. To honour the respect with which he was held in all circles, his body was carried through Jewish and Christian sections of the city.
The final resting place was at St. Jacob's church of the Holy Sepulchre on Mount Zion, and the host of mourners included several leading civil dignitaries. Since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, Mr. Janhu had been acquainted with top Israeli politicians, military officials and businessmen. He was often described as an advocate of Israeli-Palestinian coexistence and had survived three previous attempts on his life. Before the body was interred, Mr. Janhu's brother and sons places bullets in the coffin -- thus signifying that his murder would be avenged.
