    Background: The finals of the European Amateur Boxing Championships were held in Halle, East Germany on Sunday (15 June). Poland's Leszek Blazynski won the flyweight title by beating Alexander Tkatschenko of the U.S.S.R. But in the Middleweight class it was a Soviet, Leonid Schaposchnikow, who took the title from Bernd Wittenburg of East Germany.

    SYNOPSIS: In the flyweight bout Blazynski, number 83, seemed to have the edge from the start. Early into the first round the Polish miner pinned Tkatschenko against the ropes, and knocked him down.

    As the match continued, Blazynski poured on the pressure, forcing the Soviet fighter once again to the ground. But no sooner had the referee finished the compulsory count against Tkatschenko and he recovered to continued the fight. The bout went the full number of rounds and Blazynski was unanimously declared the winner.

    In the Middleweight class, it was the Soviet Leonid Schaposchnikow, number 137, who dominated the match. By the third round, Wittenburg was just holding on. Schaposchnikow managed to knock Wittenburg down, but never got the knock-out he wanted. But still Schaposchnikow continued his attack, forcing Wittenburg was quiet dazed near the end, but he continued to stay on his feet.

    Schaposchnikow, a soldier, won on points. The finals were attended by 5,000 East German fans.
