Angola, one of the Portuguese colonies responsible for the revolution, is again looming as a major influence on the future of Portugal. On Monday (1 September) troops ordered to go to Angola refused, and marched through the streets to show their dissatisfaction with the way the Lisbon military Government is handling the situation.
At the same time, refugees from the colony were staging a sit-in at the Bank of Angola because the Governors had refused to exchange their Angolan bank notes for Portuguese currency.
The demonstration against the airlifting of troops to Luanda was led by members of the military police. The demonstration was the most open defiance yet by the soldiers.
Observers in Lisbon say the divisions within the military are becoming more clearly defined. The divisions are many and it will take a strong leader to stop them from breaking into open conflict.
