  • Description

Zambia's railways are running into trouble. Much of the country's rolling stock is out of commission, and there are reports of racial tension involving white Rhodesians.

Zambia's system is officially part of Rhodesian Railways, and Rhodesia has several hundred people working there. ??? these, four hundred have opted to return to Rhodesia and 214 have already gone, leaving the Zambians chronically short of fitters. The Kaunda administration has recruited technicians from abroad in order to keep rolling stock on the move. Feelings are reported to be running high between those Rhodesians who have not yet left Zambia, and the immigrant railway workers and local population. Matters came to ??? head recently with the beating up of a Scot, Mr. Andrew Allison, in an incident involving white Rhodesians at Broken Hill. The situation is causing particular concern to the Zambian Government because of the double importance of the railways in the nations economy: they are vital for the export of copper to Lobito Bay and for the transport of coal to service the copper mines.
