  • Description

THE FIRST DIRECT COMMERCIAL RAIL LINK BETWEEN ATHENS AND SOFIA IS OPEN. TWO TRAINS MET AT THE BORDER BETWEEN GREECE AND BULGARIA ON SUNDAY TO CELEBRATE THE OCCASION.

ONE TRAIN HAD SET OUT FROM SALONIKA, THE NORTHERN GREEK PORT WHICH WILL BE A STOPPING PLACE, AND THE OTHER FROM SOFIA, THE BULGARIAN CAPITAL. THEY MET AT THE BORDER - A BRIDGE SPANNING THE RIVER STRIMON AT KOULA - WHERE MESSAGES OF FRIENDSHIP AND GOODWILL WERE EXCHANGED. LOAVES OF BREAD WERE HANDED OUT TO SEAL THE LINK.

THE LINK FOLLOWS JOINT GRECO-BULGARIAN TALKS LAST YEAR, WHICH AGREED ON THE RESTORATION OF NORMAL RELATIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. NOW A DAILY TRAIN SERVICE LINKS THE 551 MILES (888 KMS) BETWEEN BOTH CAPITALS. THE JOURNEY TAKES 24 HOURS.

(BULGARIA MAY USE THE NEW RAIL LINK TO SHIFT SOME OF HER EXPORTS TOWARDS THE MEDITERRANEAN THROUGH THE FREE ZONE ALREADY IN OPERATION IN SALONIKA).
