  • Description

Israeli forces yesterday (Tuesday, June 18) completed the second phase of the four-stage withdrawal form the Golan Heights, handing back 300 square miles (800 square kms) of the Bulge captured in the October War.

Prior to the withdrawal, Israeli troops and the tanks paraded at Tel Shams. Israel's Northern Commander, Major General Raphael Eitan, watched the withdrawal and told his soldiers that they would return with renewed strength if they were forced to do so.

Nevertheless, the separation of forces was reported to have continued smoothly, and by Tuesday evening the Tel Shams sector had been handed over to the United Nations forces, with the Israeli troops holding a temporary line a few kilometres beyond the ceasefire line at the end of the 1967 war.

SYNOPSIS: On the Golan Heights, the Israeli withdrawal and disengagement of forces continues smoothly. When the Israeli flag was struck in the Tel Shams sector on Tuesday, the Israelis had handed back nearly three quarters of the salient captured during the October war last year. The Israelis were falling back to temporary positions only a few miles beyond the ceasefire line established at the end of the 1967 war. This withdrawal completed the second phase of the four-stage disengagement plan. So far everything has gone as planed with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force briefly occupying territory before handing over to the Syrians.

The Tel Shames occupation ended with 2 parade of Israeli armour. The Northern Commander, Major General Eitan, was there to tell his troops that they'd be back in renewed strength if they were forced to return. Those who had fought for this territory, he added, knew who were the true victors. The whole Israeli withdrawal is due to be completed by June the twenty-sixth.
