    THE KENYA PRIME MINISTER, MR JOMO KENYATTA, HELD TALKS IN NAIROBI YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) WITH SOMALI CHIEFS FROM THE DISPUTED NORTHERN FRONTIER DISTRICT -- CLAIMED BY THE SOMALI REPUBLIC. WITH HIM AT THE TALKS WERE MR TOM MBOYA, HIS MINISTER OF JUSTICE, AND MR JOSEPH MURUMBI, MINISTER OF STATE.

    MR MCDONALD, THE KENYA GOVERNOR, WHO PRESIDED AT THE MEETING, CALLED IN THE SOMALI CHIEFS BECAUSE OF GOVERNMENT FEARS THAT VIOLENCE MIGHT FLARE UP IN THE FRONTIER DISTRICT. THREE BATTALIONS OF THE KING'S AFRICAN RIFLES ARE REMAINING ON A FOUR-HOUR STANDBY IN CASE OF ANY TROUBLE. THEY WERE PLACED ON THE ALERT FOLLOWING THE BREAKDOWN OF TALKS IN ROME LAST WEEK ON THE FUTURE OF THE AREA.

    THE KENYA GOVERNMENT HAS BANNED ALL NON-ESSENTIAL TRAVEL TO THE NORTHERN FRONTIER DISTRICT. AND DR SHERMARKE, THE SOMALI PREMIER, HAS REPORTEDLY SAID HE WANTS HIS GOVERNMENT WORKERS IN MILITARY UNIFORM BECAUSE OF THE "SERIOUS SITUATION".
