  • Description

High-ranking officials from member states of the East African Community met in Nairobi on Wednesday (20 August) to decide the composition of a special commission to review the Treaty of Co-operation.

The treaty, between Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, was introduced in 1967 as a virtual replacement for the common standards and services the three nations shared under colonial rule. Particularly, the community's transport and communications services are governed by terms in the Treaty.

Continuing difficulties in administration have prompted the need for a review of the Treaty's terms of reference. The three member states are now of largely differing economic and political structures.

The first objective of Wednesday's special meeting of ministers and other delegates was to decide who would take part in the review subject to presidential approval.

At the close of the meeting, delegates expressed their faith in the organisation's future.
