Background: Reconstruction is well underway in the cities along the Suez Canal, and on Tuesday (10 September) President Sadat began a four-day tour of inspection in Port Said at the canal's northern end. He received a warm and enthusiastic welcome from thousands of people, many of them workers engaged in various reconstruction projects. The last time he was in Port Said - just over three months age - the Egyptian Head of State expressed concern about the rate of progress of reconstruction work.

During his tour, President Sadat is being accompanied by his Minister of Housing and Redevelopment, Said Osman Ahmed Osman.

While in Port Said, the President Spoke to newsmen accompanying his party. Turning his attention away from purely domestic issues, he warned that although Egypt was seeking a peaceful settlement, Egypt would be forced to go war should Israel fail to withdraw from occupied Arab territories. President Sadat said andy Israeli attack on the Canal cities - Port Said, Ismailia and Suez - would be regarded as an attack against the depth of Egypt and would be followed by strikes deep into Israel.

Only one incident marred an otherwise smooth visit to Part Said. It came when an overenthusiastic worker rushed forward and tried to kiss the President, shouting "Anwar el Riase" - "Anwar, our leader." There was a brief scuffle involving security men and the worker who was dragged away, clutching a letter he had tried to give the President.

SYNOPSIS: Port Said, the war-shattered port at the northern Mediterranean end of Egypt's Suez Canal. Hars work is progressing fast to rebuild the town devastated by six and a half years of sporadic but fierce fighting with Israel. Together with the other major towns on the Canal - Ismailia and Suez - some seven hundred thousand people had lost their homes.

On Tuesday President Sadat went to Port Said to see the reconstruction work for himself and was given a warm and enthusiastic reception.

One worker's over-enthusiasm get him into trouble with vigilant security men. Shouting "Anwar our Leader" he tried to present a letter to the President. But Sadat was unruffled by the incident. And, together with Said Osman Ahmed Osman his Minister of Housing and Re-development, he began an extensive tour of the area.

The Canal is scheduled for re-opening next March returning to Egypt much-needed foreign currency revenues of around a hundred and twenty million pounds a year. But it's not just the Canal which the Egyptian planners are working on. They also have scheduled a massive redevelopment scheme for the area.
