  • Description

THE BODY OF THE LATE FORMER PRESIDENT OF SOUTH KOREA, SYNGMAN RHEE, WAS RETURNED TO SEOUL ON FRIDAY (JULY 23) SO THE FORMER LEADER CAN BE GIVEN A STATE FUNERAL.HE DIED IN HONOLULU LAST MONDAY AT THE AGE OF 90 AFTER BEING ADMITTED TO A LOCAL NURSING HOME FOLLOWING A STROKE.

EX-PRESIDENT RHEE SOUGHT EXILE IN HAWAII AFTER STUDENT RIOTS IN SOUTH KOREA BROUGHT DOWN HIS 12 YEAR OLD GOVERNMENT IN 1960.DURING RECENT TIMES HE HAD BEEN REPORTED IN BAD HEALTH ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS AND AT TIMES HAD BEEN SERIOUSLY ILL.

HE HAD HOPED TO RETURN TO SOUTH KOREA, WHOSE CAUSE HE HAD CHAMPIONED AS FAR BACK AS THE 1920'S AND 1930'S.HOWEVER, THE MILITARY GOVERNMENT OF GENERAL CHUNG HEE PARK, THE NOW ELECTED PRESIDENT, REFUSED HIM PERMISSION TO RETURN HOME IN 1962 AND NEVER REVOKED THEIR DECISION.

AN ESTIMATED CROWD OF 160,000 PEOPLE LINED THE ROUTE OF THE CORTEGE FROM KIMPO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO SYNGMAN RHEE'S ONE-TIME HOME IN SEOUL ON FRIDAY.AT THE HOUSE, TOO, THERE WERE MANY FORMER COLLEAGUES AND FOLLOWERS WHO CAME TO PAY THEIR RESPECTS TO THE MAN ONCE CALLED 'THE TIGER OF KOREA'.

HOWEVER, NOT ALL THE CITIZENS OF THE CITY WERE IN ACCORD WITH THE GOVERNMENT'S DECISION TO STAGE A STATE FUNERAL FOR THE LATE SYNGMAN RHEE.MANY DISABLED PEOPLE - SOME FORMER STUDENTS - STAGED A HUNGER STRIKE IN PROTEST.MOST CLAIMED THAT THEIR DISABILITY HAD FOLLOWED HARSH TREATMENT AT THE HANDS OF RHEE'S POLICE PRIOR TO THE RIOTS OF 1960.
