  • Description

The exodus of Europeans from the Congo Republic continued July 23 as Sabena aircraft at Elisabethville Airport - looking much like a refugee camp - waited for Belgian families to embark for Brussels.

Belgian Army Chief of Staff, General Cumont, told Mr. Tshombe, self-styled "President of the independent Katanga Republic", that United Nations soldiers were to enter Katanga and that Belgian troops would leave systematically. Threatening armed resistance, Mr. Tshombe has said he would not allow United Nations troops to enter Katanga. Anxious groups of Belgians told Count Lynden - the Belgian Premier's personal envoy - that all Europeans would leave Katanga if Belgian troops withdrew.

In Leopoldville July 24 there was disagreement between United Nations representatives and Belgian Government officials. The Belgians maintain that the UNO resolutions calling for the withdrawal of their troops does not apply to the garrisons at Kamina and Kitona. The United Nations representatives insist that the resolution is quite clear and refers to all Belgian soldiers throughout the Congo Republic.
