  • Description

THOUSANDS OF TURKISH STUDENTS MARCHED IN ISTANBUL ON APRIL 28TH. THEY WERE CELEBRATING THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR RISING AGAINST THE REGIME OF THE LATE ADNAN MENDERES. LED BY STUDENTS' BANDS, THE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED THROUGH THE CITY TO TAKSIM SQUARE AND PLACED A WREATH ON THE SPOT WHERE ONE OF THEIR NUMBER DIED DURING THE REVOLT.

THEY ALSO MARCHED TO THE STUDIOS OF RADIO ISTANBUL TO DELIVER A PROTEST AT THE ABSENCE OF ANY RADIO PROGRAMME COMMEMORATING THE UPRISING. ANOTHER PROTEST WAS MADE TO THE NEWSPAPER, "YENI ISTANBUL," WHICH HAD DEMANDED AN AMNESTY FOR FORMER MENDERES OFFICIALS STILL IN PRISON.

PRESIDENT CEMAL GURSEL, SPEAKING TO REPORTERS ON APRIL 28TH, SAID THAT THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY FORMED SIX MONTHS AGO HAD NOT YET COME TO GRIPS WITH ANY OF THE COUNTRY'S MANY PROBLEMS. HE ALSO SPOKE OF THE DIFFICULTY OF MANAGING THE COALITION GOVERNMENT FORMED BY THE JUSTICE AND REPUBLICAN PEOPLE'S PARTY. HOWEVER, ON APRIL 25TH IT WAS REPORTED FROM ANKARA, THE CAPITAL, THAT POLITICAL TENSION HAD BEEN EASED BY A STATEMENT FROM THE JUSTICE PARTY THAT IT HAD DECIDED TO SUPPORT THE MOTION INTRODUCED IN PARLIAMENT BY MR. INONU, THE PRIME MINISTER, TO GRANT IMMUNITY TO 69 OFFICERS WHO ATTEMPTED A COUP D'ETAT LAST FEBRUARY.
