  • Description

Two injured American sailors have been airlifted to Halifax from their ship in the Atlantic. The men were brought by helicopter to hospital for treatment.

U-S-S Investigator was on patrol about seventy-five miles off the coast of Nova Scotia when she radioed Halifax that she had trouble in her engine room and two of the crew had been injured. Two aircraft were sent out by the search and Rescue unit of the R-C-A-F from Greenwood. One of the new Voyager helicopters and an Albatross met at the scene. The Atlantic was too rough to permit the amphibious helicopter to put down on the water, so an aircraft winch was used to hoist the men on board. The Albatross also remained on the scene as an observer, in case of emergency. One of the injured seamen was a stretcher case, and he was put into a litter to be taken aboard. The other -- who had a broken arm, was winched up in the regular manner. Both sailors were hurt while working on the disabled engine of Investigator. The helicopter landed at the naval air station at Shearwater, and the men were taken tot he Armed Forces hospital for treatment.
