Background: FOLLOWING THE SUCCESSFUL ORBITAL FLIGHT OF CHIMPANZEE "ENOS", A PRESS CONFERENCE AT CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA, NOV 29 REVEALED THAT JOHN HERSCHEL GLENN, A 40-YEAR-OLD U.S. MARINE LIEUTENANT-COLONEL, HAD BEEN SELECTED TO MAKE THE UNITED STATES' FIRST MANNED ORBITAL FLIGHT. NO DATE FOR THIS WAS GIVEN.

COLONEL GLENN - ON THE PLATFORM AT THE CONFERENCE WITH LT. COMMANDER MALCOLM SCOTT CARPENTER WHO WAS NAMED STAND-BY PILOT FOR THE FLIGHT - SAID HE WAS VERY HAPPY AT THE SELECTION.

MR. ROBERT GILRUTH, DIRECTOR OF "PROJECT MERCURY" - THE AMERICAN 'MAN-IN-SPACE' PROGRAMME - SAID THE SELECTION OF GLENN AND CARPENTER DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN THAT THE NEXT 'MERCURY' FLIGHT WILL BE A MANNED FLIGHT, OR THAT THE NEXT FLIGHT WILL BE THIS YEAR. EARLIER, HE SAID OFFICIALS WOULD HAVE TO TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT THE RESULTS OF THE NOV. 29 CHIMPANZEE FLIGHT, WHICH TERMINATED AFTER TWO ORBITS INSTEAD OF THREE BECAUSE OF TECHNICAL TROUBLE WITH THE SPACE CRAFT, BEFORE FUTURE PLANS CAN BE MADE.
