  • Description

THE TINY VILLAGE OF LAKE PLACID IN NEW YORK STATE HAS A POPULATIONS OF 3,000, BUT FOR TWO WEEKS IN 1980 THIS WILL BE MULTIPLIED MANY TIMES AS PEOPLE FLOOD INTO THE TOWN TO ATTEND THE WINTER OLYMPICS.

THE TOWN HOSTED THE WINTER GAMES IN 1932 AND MANY OF THE FACILITIES REMAIN. BUT, UNLIKE MOST TOWNS IN PREVIOUS YEARS. LAKE PLACID RESIDENTS ARE DETERMINED TO KEEP THE GAMES AT A LEVEL ADEQUATE FOR JUST THOSE TAKING PART. THEY ARE ALSO COMMITTED TO HOLD THE GAMES WITHOUT CAUSING ECOLOGICAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE.

THE GAMES WILL COST THE TOWN $35 MILLION (10.5 MILLION STERLING) SPREAD BETWEEN THE FEDERAL AND SATE GOVERNMENTS.

THE TOWNSPEOPLE HAVE ALREADY AGREED -- IN A REFERENDUM -- TO HOST THE GAMES, BUT SOME STILL HAVE THEIR DOUBTS A TO THE WISDOM OF THE DECISION.
